The United States Senate confirmed Condoleeza Rice as the new US Secretary of State. The vote ended 85 to 13 in favor. Rice replaces outgoing State-Head, Colin Powell, who resigned from office shortly following President George W. Bush's election to a second term in the White House.

After meeting with the new Secretary of State, the Israeli Foreign Minister, Sylvan Shalom, indicated that a visit to the Middle East by Rice could be imminent.
