Qumran: Home of the Essenes
The Essenes were a strict Torah observant, Messianic apocalyptic Jewish sect that lived in Qumran from about 200 B.C. to 68 C.E./A.D. They lived in a relatively modern village, but hid their library in the caves overlooking their homes when threatened by the Romans occupying Israel at the time.
