Our Soldiers....Our Sons
These brave men and women are engaged in a daily battle against brutal, cold-blooded Arab terrorists. They lay their lives on the line on a daily basis, so that ALL Israelis can go on living THEIR day-to-day life in a routine manner. This, in spite of the on-going Palestinian war of terror.
The majority of Israel's army is of an age that you would think should be sitting in college classes, or partying in pubs and nightclubs. The Israeli youth, male or female, is required to go into military service straight from high school, at the age of 19. No college until after 2 or 3 years of mandatory military service, often extended by several more years.
These young people have a strong desire to serve their country, with more than 90% of the enlistees competing for positions in the Elite combat units of the Israel Defense Forces.
Our soldiers are fighting an Islamic enemy that is heavily armed with guns, knives and bombs. These, in addition to the well-publicized bricks, boulders and stone that seem so insignificant against the might of Israeli tanks. Even these are, however, quite deadly when smashed through the windshield of a rapidly moving vehicle, or dropped on the head of an unsuspecting soldier from four stories above.
These finest-of-the-fine are our sons and daughters. They are our future scientists, doctors, dentist and lawyers. They will become the teachers of our children, the nurses in our hospitals and the leaders and public servants of our country. Many of the officers are young parents, with children of their own. They come from all walks of life, city, country, kibbutz or Druse village.
They are rich, they are poor... religious and secular. Doctors, lawyers, rabbis, teachers, plumbers, carpenters....the army of Israel is largely an Army of reservists, most Israelis summoned to military duty every year. They represent the full spectrum of Israeli society, all joined by a common purpose and desire....the readiness to put their life on the line defending the country and the people that they love.
THIS is who the Israeli Army is....The Army of the Jewish State of Israel....The Army of the Jewish Nation.
